ToneRune

We created Tonerune because we love music.

We are an independent team based in Nepal and Japan. We believe in sharing the joys of music, and that learning should be easy, ad-free, and accessible to everyone.

Our mission

We're building a personal resource that helps you. Without ads, fluff, or distractions.

We want our platform free, open, and helpful.

The internet is more than just a place to search chord shapes. It's where you share what you're learning, where you find inspiration, and also where every platform is trying to get you hooked. We can't say what you do on your phones (because we're not tracking you), but we can say, for sure - you find ads annoying. We are building more than a website or an app- we are building something that makes you think and reflect on what tethers you to music, and we are sharing what we find meaningful.

Most guitar resources are buried in ads and want you to get their shiny courses/apps before you can play anything. We love the philosophy of MusicTheory.net. Communities on Reddit, Quora and YouTube creators have also influenced us tremendously. We're giving back to the very community that has always helped us.

When you're learning, you want to hear how things sound. You don't care about theory you can't use. We build tools to help you explore and understand better. We don't have AI features that will talk to you and make you feel good because we want you to pick up your guitar, not your phone. We want you curious. We pick humans over hype, and we believe learning music is faster when AI is not involved and it's personal.

The team

Rizan and Monika handle development, direction, and design decisions.

Business model

We have no outside developers or investors. We are a team of two, trying to make a difference in how people learn music. We are not a startup, and we aren't trying to become one. We are not in this to make money, but we do have a plan to pay bills so we can keep doing this.

We plan to keep the site and all resources free. We are exploring ways to accept reader-support through donations and PWYW (pay what you want) models.
